Overview
Lin Haven is an 81 hectare property in the south of New Zealand (near Tūātapere) stewarded by Passionate Permies Evita and Dylan. The small sheep farm was purchased by Passionate Permies Ltd in October 2023. 35 hectares was monoculture forest and logged in early 2023. These areas are fenced from livestock to ensure they regenerate to native bush. Passionate Permies will manage the predators to aid the natural regeneration process. The property is rolling hill country with a clay loam soil that drains well. Some single row tree windbreaks exist with a few small patches of remnant bush. There are a handful of mature native trees dotted around as well as some non-natives near the sheds that seem to teem with bird life. On the remaining farming land, further areas will be fenced to exclude livestock for more tree plantings either as windbreak, habitat, fodder, coppice, forest garden, orchard, etc. Livestock numbers will be kept low for the initial few years to allow the soil to recover and plant species to diversify. Lin Haven welcomes volunteers to help with track creation and maintenance so that trap lines can be checked regularly. Regenerating forest at Lin Haven is predated on by possums, deer, hares and birds are harmed by mustelids, rats, and possums – all non-native introduced animals.
Impact story
Passionate Permies started trapping possums soon after arriving and with over 130 culled, the native birds already have more chance to successfully breed. The trees that they have planted near the main house are growing fast and already attracting more birds. The forestry blocks have most surfaces now covered with plants and in some areas the “weeds” are already 2m high – the forest wants to return!

Achievements
Lin Haven is setting up a permaculture homestead where there was just a paddock of grass. They have comfortable living quarters, harvest rainwater, solar energy to heat water and charge batteries, and grow much of their own food. They also have somewhere for guests to stay when they come to learn with them. Fruit and nut trees have been planted on site, as well as some areas of native tree species.
