Ecosystem Restoration Communities

Erasmus More Trees Now Project

And at the end of 2023, ERC Rocciaviva in Basilicata, Italy, and the Ecosystem Restoration Communities Foundation teamed up to launch RestorACTION, a pioneering project funded by the European Union’s Erasmus+ programme. This inspiring collaboration brought together Rocciaviva’s focus on environmental and social regeneration in the Basilicata region with ERC’s mission to equip local people with the skills and tools needed to restore their own ecosystems.

RestorACTION aimed to empower the local community in Basilicata, where farmers and landowners face growing challenges from land degradation, extreme weather, and declining soil fertility and livelihoods. The project engaged residents as citizen scientists, increasing their environmental literacy and training them to identify degraded areas and monitor ecosystem health. Using a simple smartphone app, participants collected reliable ecological data to establish baseline studies, enabling informed and effective restoration actions. By bridging the gap between restoration experts and local people, RestorACTION fostered a community-driven approach to reversing ecosystem degradation and securing a sustainable future for the region.

About the App

The new Monitoring App, developed through this project, enables restoration tracking by logging intervention plots and polygons, and a record of techniques used on the land. The app includes step-by-step methodologies and video tutorials, and enables access to data so that it can be analysed and widely shared across the network of earth restorers. Furthermore, low-connectivity support means you can collect data anywhere (even remote areas), and the data will automatically sync with the app when you are back online. Hit the link below to take a tour of the app.

Online Project Dissemination Event

Our online dissemination event took place on 26 March 2025. Hit the link below to watch the recording, for key insights from the project and an overview of the Monitoring App.

About Sinal do Vale

Sinal do Vale is a center of the Regeneration of individuals, Communities, and Ecosystems. We seek to develop a bioregional regenerative economy through:

  • Local solutions for the regeneration of the natural and social ecosystems are shared through entrepreneurship, education, and socio-environmental projects.
  • Hosting people from all ages for learning journeys, retreats, and facilitating activities on our campus to inspire positive transformation.

Fun facts about Sinal do Vale

Current projects

Forest restoration project: our model seeks to develop low-cost soil regeneration solutions. We have approximately 60 hectares of growing forest, using 4 different techniques depending on the characteristics of each area: total planting, densification, regeneration conduction, and agroforestry. Efforts also involve working in the native tree nursery and monitoring the health of reforestation areas. Since 2011, SINAL have planted over 41,000 trees

Green jackfruit start-up/ social enterprise: Madre Frutos is a Kickstarter with a regeneration business model that uses green jackfruit in the Atlantic Rainforest as a drive to create jobs and promote sustainable food chains in Rio.

Boteco do floresta: Boteco is a food processing lab for all the produce growing at SINAL, including our organic garden, agroforests, and PANCs gardens. Led by a Terrapia Culinary School alumni.

Local community outreach and educational program : For the past 12 years, we have partnered with five local schools teaching the elementary and high school levels. Throughout the years, we have hosted around 400 students, with a curriculum of hands-on environmental education, artistic activities such as clay and natural crafts, English classes, and mural painting in local schools.
