Regenerative Agriculture & Ecosystem Restoration volunteer, Anjos do Sertão (Brazil)

About

Anjos do Sertão is located in Piauí state in northeast Brazil, within the world’s only Caatinga biome – South America’s largest seasonally dry tropical forest. They are working to restore the local ecosystems and environment while enhancing livelihoods through agroforestry and bee keeping.

What the position entails

Volunteers will support the field teams while gaining hands-on experience in regenerative agriculture. During their first week, participants rotate through various disciplines, including agroforestry, soil regeneration, organic gardening, beekeeping, reforestation, and native tree nursery management. Following this introductory period, volunteers may choose an area of interest to develop a specialized project aligned with IAS’ ongoing operations.

How it works

The opportunity is open throughout the year. However, the work focus will depend on the time of the year e.g. July to October is the cashew season while January to April is the honey season.

Volunteers are asked to commit to 6–8 hours of daily work at the Anjos do Sertão farm school. This ensures a deep immersion in the local environment, allowing participants to gain a comprehensive understanding of the regenerative techniques and field practices employed on site.

In their free time, the volunteers can do as they choose, but they must follow the rules of no alcohol or drugs while on the farm. We recommend that the volunteers spend a weekend at Serra da Capivara National Park, located just 100km from the farm. This UNESCO World Heritage site features rock art that serves as evidence of some of the earliest human presence in the Americas

Anjos do Sertão is located 35km away from the closest town (Canto do Buriti). A weekly trip is made into town to pick up any additional supplies that the farm does not provide.

What skills are required?

Volunteers should be motivated individuals who are eager to learn and ready to engage in hands-on field work. Ideal candidates have a deep appreciation for nature and are comfortable living and working in a remote, rural environment.

Where will I stay?

Anjos do Sertão has two special dormitories for volunteers, each with its own bathroom. However, as the farm does not yet produce all its own food, a fee of US$ 10 per day is applicable which includes three meals per day, enjoyed with the whole team in the dining area.
