Erasmus+ More Trees Now Project
Funded by the European Union’s Erasmus+ programme through Léargas, the Erasmus+ More Trees Now Project is a transformative European initiative dedicated to ecosystem restoration and climate change mitigation through innovative tree planting methodologies and educational programmes. By restoring natural ecosystems and promoting sustainable practices and environmental stewardship across Europe and globally, the project is contributing to a healthier environment and a more resilient future for all communities.
At its core, the Erasmus+ More Trees Now Project is combating climate change through large-scale, sustainable tree planting initiatives while simultaneously addressing biodiversity loss by increasing genetic diversity in reforestation efforts. A critical barrier to effective ecosystem restoration is the shortage of available tree nurseries to meet the demand for reforestation at scale. Additionally, most commercially available trees lack genetic diversity, as they typically originate from single nurseries and are often non-native in genetic composition, reducing the resilience of restored ecosystems. Rather than relying on limited nursery supplies, the More Trees Now methodology (developed by Stichting MEERGroen) harvests tree saplings and shrubs from areas where they grow abundantly but may not reach maturity or are at risk of being mowed down. This innovative approach ensures genetic diversity by utilizing locally-adapted species rather than commercially-sourced monocultures, creating healthier and more resilient forests. This sustainable harvesting model demonstrates that effective large-scale reforestation and environmental restoration doesn’t require depleting existing resources — instead, it works with nature’s abundance to achieve transformative outcomes.
The project also prioritizes fostering civic engagement in rural communities across Europe, and building green skills and ecosystem restoration knowledge among adult learners in rural communities. By empowering communities to take active roles in environmental restoration, the Erasmus+ More Trees Now Project is creating lasting change that extends far beyond individual tree plantings.
The Project is following a carefully structured framework to achieve its set objectives:
- Best practices exchange facilitates knowledge sharing across different climates and regions, ensuring that successful approaches in one area can be adapted and applied elsewhere.
- Local training programmes deliver hands-on instruction in reforestation methods tailored to rural communities, building capacity among adult learners to lead restoration efforts in their own regions.
- The research component tests and documents ecological solutions for climate and biodiversity crises, generating evidence-based insights that strengthen the project’s methodologies.
- Educational tools development creates online courses and innovative learning spaces specifically designed for ecosystem restoration and regenerative agriculture, making cutting-edge knowledge accessible to adult learners across partner countries.
- Finally, awareness is being raised nationally and internationally through a tailored communication plan, amplifying the project’s impact and inspiring broader environmental action.
About the More Trees Now Methodology
This innovative methodology involves rescuing tree saplings and replanting them across natural landscapes that serve as nurturing grounds for growth. The tree saplings are harvested (with the permission of the local forester or landowner) and stored temporarily in local ‘hubs’ before being donated to farmers, landowners and citizens to be planted. This practice gives nature a helping hand, offering endangered trees a second chance while simultaneously restoring biodiversity and reconnecting communities to the natural world. To date over 3 million tree saplings have been replanted across the Netherlands using this technique (with the help of nearly 25,000 volunteers). Through this project the methodology is now being tested in Southern Europe and Ireland too.
Learning through Desktop Research & Focus Groups
A key project activity to date has been the production of a collective research paper synthesizing ecosystem restoration and reforestation techniques from leading academic literature, serving as the foundation for our training curriculum. Drawing on research conducted across Europe’s diverse wet and dry climate zones, project partners have engaged directly with local communities through focus groups to understand their unique needs and challenges. This collaborative approach ensures the work of the partners bridges academic excellence with practical, community-driven solutions — empowering stakeholders, fostering cooperation, and equipping participants across Europe with the skills and knowledge to lead ecosystem restoration and community tree-planting initiatives in their own regions.
Learn the Techniques! Pre Register Now for the Online Course
To make reforestation accessible to all, the project partners are developing a new “how to” online course. Whether you are an individual climate activist, a landowner, or a representative from an institution, The Forest Makers course provides the tools to analyze your local environmental, social, and economic landscape before choosing the most effective reforestation strategies. Through a blend of theoretical expertise and proven methodologies — including the “More Trees Now” approach and specialized techniques for both wet and dry climates — you will learn how to navigate funding, mobilize community support, and overcome regional challenges. You’ll also develop a robust, site-specific tree planting plan, ready to be implemented, maintained, and shared to create a lasting, positive impact on your local region.
Launching September 2026, The Forest Makers will be available in English, French, Spanish and Italian – and is freely available for all. Hit the link below to pre register for this course now!
Local Training & Dissemination Events You can Attend
Between November 2025 and February 2026, local community training events were held in Italy, France, Ireland, the Netherlands, and Spain. During these events, project partners collaborated with local community stakeholders to develop expertise in effective tree harvesting and replanting techniques.
Further on site events are scheduled to take place in each of these countries in late 2026, culminating in a final online dissemination event.
We invite anyone interested in learning these techniques and participating in the events to join us! For more information, reach out and we’ll connect you with the local project partner coordinating your regional event, and sign you up for the final, online dissemination event.
